Understanding and Configuring Syslog

The idea of syslog is to summarize all the logs of all network devices and servers on one server, and you always have to consult this syslog server to see the logs.

BSD -> older syslog format

IETF -> newer syslog format

UDP -> 514

A typical syslog message:

%SYS-5-CONFIG_I: Configured from console by console

SYS                       -> system message

5                             -> severity message 5 (notice) (0 is emergency until level 7 is debug)
